Why Does My House Smell Like Sewer?

Short answer: the most common cause is a dry drain trap in a little-used bathroom or floor drain. After that come a failed toilet wax ring, a blocked vent, and, less often, a damaged sewer line. Start with water in every trap.

Plumber checking a floor drain trap and vent area while tracing a sewer smell in a La Vergne home

A sewer smell inside the house means sewer gas is getting past a barrier that should stop it. Every drain in your home has a trap, a U-shaped section that holds water and seals the pipe. When that water evaporates from an unused guest bathroom, laundry drain, or floor drain, gas comes straight through. That dry trap is the cause in the majority of the smell calls we run in La Vergne, and the fix is a cup of water.

If the smell survives refilling every trap, the search moves to the toilet wax ring, the vent system, and finally the sewer line itself. Our drain repair team works that order because it goes from a free fix to a scoped repair without guessing.

Start with the Dry Trap Test

Run water for 30 seconds in every sink, tub, and shower, including the ones nobody uses. Pour a bucket of water into each floor drain, laundry drain, and the drain near the water heater. Then air out the house. If the smell fades within a day, a dry trap was the cause. Traps in a guest bath can dry out in a few weeks, faster in winter when indoor air is dry and during summer heat near Percy Priest Lake humidity swings. A teaspoon of mineral oil on top of the water in rarely used floor drains slows evaporation.

Four Sources, Four Fixes

SourceSmell patternFix
Dry trapSmell near one drain, often a guest bath or floor drain, worse after trips awayRefill the trap; add mineral oil for rarely used drains
Failed toilet wax ringSmell concentrated at one toilet base, sometimes a rocking toilet or water stainPull the toilet, replace the wax ring, reseat and seal
Blocked vent stackSmell plus gurgling drains, often after storms or in fall leaf seasonClear the vent from the roof and confirm drainage
Cracked pipe or sewer line damagePersistent smell, slow drains, sometimes a soft yard spot over the lineCamera inspection, then targeted sewer line repair

The wax ring deserves a note: it seals the toilet to the floor flange, and when it fails, gas escapes at the base even if no water leaks visibly. Our toilet repair page covers the reseat work. Vent problems show up in Brookside and other mature, tree-covered areas when debris and nests block the stack. Line damage is the least common cause but the most important to rule out on creek-side lots in Cedar Grove, where roots press on older lines near Stones River and Stewart Creek.

When to Treat It as Urgent

A house-wide smell paired with sewage backing up into a tub or floor drain is a main line problem, not a trap problem. Stop running water and call. Sewer gas in small amounts from one dry trap is a nuisance; a blocked main line that is pushing gas and waste back into the house is a same-day call. If anyone in the house feels dizzy or nauseated from a strong smell, leave and call from outside first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my house smell like sewer when I return from vacation?

That pattern almost always means a trap dried out while the house sat unused. The guest bathroom and floor drains go first. Refill every trap with water, air the house out, and the smell should clear within a day.

Is sewer gas in the house dangerous?

Brief exposure to a faint smell from a dry trap is mainly unpleasant. Strong, persistent sewer gas is not something to live with: it can cause headaches and nausea, and it signals an open path into the drain system. If the smell is strong or anyone feels unwell, leave and call from outside.

How do I know if it is the toilet wax ring?

Smell centered on one toilet, a toilet that rocks slightly, or staining at the base all point to the wax ring. The test requires pulling the toilet, which is also the repair, so it is usually confirmed and fixed in the same visit.

Can a blocked vent really cause a sewer smell?

Yes. The vent stack lets sewer gas exit above the roof and keeps trap water from being siphoned out. When it blocks, traps can empty and gas finds indoor paths. Gurgling drains alongside the smell are the classic vent clue.

What if the smell does not go away after filling the traps?

Then the cause is mechanical: wax ring, vent, cracked pipe, or line damage. Call (615) 583-1830 and tell us where the smell is strongest and whether drains gurgle. That narrows the first test we run.
